Small Business Week With Teatro Verde

Founded in 1997 by co-owners Shawn Gibson and Michael Pellegrino, Teatro Verde (meaning “Green Theatre” in Italian) is Toronto’s top luxury florist and home to a wide range of high-end gifting and home décor collections.

Over the years, Shawn and Michael have not only helped Teatro Verde define global style when it comes to weddings and special occasions, but have helped build a brand famous for its bold aesthetic.

Here’s what co-owner Shawn Gibson had to say about owning and operating a small business in 2020!

Regardless of the season, what is your absolute favourite floral combination?

Shawn: Its hard to narrow it down to one combo, but I love the vibrancy of hot pink and bright orange. It takes me back to the 60’s, but moves me forward in todays trends. I am also a huge fan of crisp white and green – it’s chic, simple and fits in almost any décor story.

Dare we say it’s been an unprecedented year – what is your biggest takeaway of 2020?

Shawn: 2020 has been a unique year indeed. One must always look at what’s in front of them as a lesson, and take the good out of that lesson. Pivot to survive and work with others around you (for example; suppliers, landlords and banks), they’re all in the same boat. Working together will give you a sense of direction and build a road map to get out of hard times.

Most of all, work hard and stay positive. Retail is a human to human business, and optimism is half the battle.

What’s your best piece of advice for other small businesses?

Shawn: My advice to other small business has always been to fill a niche, go against the trend, and stay true to your core values.
