Closet Clean Out – Make Way For The New

As we navigate our way through the ever-changing pandemic, we remain grateful for the healthcare and essential frontline workers. Another thing we’re really grateful for? The hot weather that has allowed us to participate in physically-distanced, small gatherings outside! And with the changing of another season usually means a refresh of our wardrobes. Although there’s a new norm to shopping in-store, we’ve partnered with our in-house personal shopping team La Closette, who can’t stress enough the importance of first doing a thorough closet edit. Taking a good look at your closet before buying anything is smart! Ultimately, your shopping will be more efficient, economical and sustainable.

The Closet Edit

Now get comfortable, a closet edit can be a big job! La Closette recommends starting by pulling everything out of your closet and onto your bed (this will encourage you to get it done before bedtime!). You’ll need to decide what to keep, donate/give away (if gently used) or discard (if unwearable). Keep what you love, wear often, and feel great wearing. Commit to mending, dry cleaning and altering the pieces that need love. Get rid of pieces that don’t work for your shape, you don’t feel good in, or haven’t worn in years (and, let’s face it, you probably never will). The goal is to end up with a wardrobe that is functional, versatile and that you love; a place you’re excited to face every morning, knowing you will feel confident in whatever you wear!

The Seasonal Changeover

After completing this often physically rigorous task (and admiring how much space has opened up in your closet), it’s now time to look at what can be put away from fall/winter. But, not so fast! With fresh eyes, you’ll be amazed at how many of your pieces can be used across all four seasons.

Keep:

  • Chunky fall sweaters: Throw them on over a dress or with a skirt; if you’re feeling warm, tie them around your waist
  • Boots: Not just ankle, but also knee-highs! Wear them with a dress or skirt and bare legs (but don’t forget your sockettes!)
  • Leathers and suedes: maybe not on a blazing hot day, but there are plenty of days where you’ll be able to wear your leather pants or suede skirt with a tee and open toe sandals
  • Wool blazers: Treat them as your spring/summer coat

What Do You Need?

Now that your wardrobe is summer-ready and filled exclusively with the pieces you love, what do you really need and want?

It could be foundational pieces, such as an all-purpose pair of straight leg jeans. Maybe you often feel you don’t have the right shoes for your outfits – do you have a functional but on point heel like this season’s squared-toed strappy sandals? Sometimes clients are missing the sweet spot of effortlessly chic pieces that aren’t for work, but also aren’t too casual. Or maybe you’re looking for updated pieces, which will feel more current, such a shoulder-padded tee. Whatever you choose, it’s important to keep in mind your lifestyle needs (functionality!), how it will fit in with the rest of your wardrobe (versatility!), and of course, you should love it!
