60 Years of Made in Italy Fashion Exhibit

June marks Italian Heritage Month in Canada, an opportunity to celebrate the Italian community within our exceptionally diverse country. And if you enjoy your cultural education in the form of art appreciation, Yorkville Village is bringing a world-renowned fashion exhibit, 60 Years of Made in Italy, into the heart of Toronto, just in time for the occasion.

From June 1 to 30, 2018, fashion enthusiasts can get up-close and personal with the masterpieces of Italian style at this unique showcase, which will land at Yorkville Village after a globe-hopping tour, covering cities like Paris, Rome, Dubai and Tokyo. Presented in Toronto—its first stop in Canada—in partnership with the Consulate General of Italy and Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the thoughtfully curated exhibit was developed by StilePromoltalia and Galgano & Tota Associati.

Today, Italian style is synonymous with high glamour, luxurious materials and impeccable craftsmanship, but its evolution has been decades in the making. 60 Years of Made in Italy rewinds fashion history to Florence in 1951 (where the “Made in Italy” label originated) and illuminates the milestone moments since then. Featuring more than 50 items created by revered fashion houses like Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Roberto Cavalli, Prada, Valentino, Moschino, Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo and Gucci, the exhibit shines the spotlight on historical garments, iconic couture and prêt-à-porter, along with exclusive accessories, photographs, sketches and video. The pieces come from various archival and private collections, making this exhibit truly one of a kind.

You’ll no doubt recognize some sartorial standouts from the red carpet or silver screen, and the exhibit offers a chance to admire the impressive detailing first-hand. The collection includes the plunging, jungle-print Versace dress made famous by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammys; the Brioni tux worn by Pierce Brosnan as the always-dressed-to-thrill James Bond in 2002; and the sequinned Prada dress that sparkled on Cate Blanchett at the 2000 BAFTAs. (Just a few of the artful designs on display at 60 Years of Made in Italy can be seen below.)

Of course, if you’re inspired to add the latest and greatest in modern Italian fashion to your own wardrobe post-exhibit, you’ll find a wide array of labels at Yorkville Village boutiques, including Eleventy, Andrews (Valentino, Versace, Max Mara), Via Cavour (Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana) and TNT Man/Women (Amina Rubinacci, Isabel Benenato).

Visit the Upper and Lower Oval in Yorkville Village throughout June to explore 60 Years of Made in Italy. Admission to the showcase is free and open to the public from June 1 to 30, during standard shopping centre hours.

Some of the must-see designs that will be on display can be seen below. Stay tuned for updates on honorary guests and further details.
